The Devil’s Coach-Horse

The Rove beetle has an unusually long abdomen with a short wing case. When alarmed, it lifts the end of its abdomen and holds it straight up in a threatening manner. The beetle does not have a sting in its abdomen, but it discharges an extremely foul fluid. Perhaps because its raised abdomen is suggestive of a rearing horse it is sometimes called ‘Devil’s coach-horse’.
Rove beetles are found in rotting vegetation and in cattle dung. Some ants nurture them for the secretions from their body.
